In some businesses, the server room has evolved from a single server environment to a complex network of multiple servers, hubs and switches.  Sometimes the rapid growth of the network and the urgent requirement for new applications leaves no time for planned organization and documentation.

Following are a few indicators that it may be time to review the current state of your computer or server room facility:

• too much time is spent tracing connections
• the person who understands the system is ill and no one can resolve my problem
• there is no accurate physical and logical network drawing
• there is no room for required additional equipment
• the room is crowded and it is difficult to work with the existing equipment
• cabling is not logically organized
• cabling components are not clearly labelled
• patch cables are on the floor or across the aisle
• there is no standard method of interconnecting devices
• the room is uncomfortably warm or has hot and cold spots
• the raised floor tile is uneven or tiles are missing on a permanent basis
• power bars and extension cords are used extensively
